Movies Anywhere will allow consumers to buy movies and then store them in a "digital locker" which they can access from supported devices.
Today, the idea of merging the various digital movie collections owned by many consumers will become a reality with the expansion of the Disney Movies Anywhere app and website to include nearly every major film studio in Hollywood.
Along with Disney (and its Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm marks), the service features films from Sony Pictures Entertainment (NYSE:SNE), 20th Century Fox (FOX, FOXA), Universal Pictures (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Warner Bros.
The new Movies Anywhere is a Disney-owned entity that will operate with input from an advisory committee made up of members from each of the participating studios. Because this is a cross-platform solution, movies previously purchased on the iTunes Store will now be available to users on Android devices, and iOS users will be able to watch Disney movies they've purchased from the Google Play Store. Other retailers and studios may join in the future. Anyone who links two or more Google Play accounts to Movies Anywhere will get those films show up in their library. Movies Anywhere now offers support for devices including Amazon Fire; Android devices and Android TV; Apple TV; Chromecast; Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod touch; and Roku. Unfortunately, last month Disney announced that they are pulling support for Microsoft's Movies & TV platform from Movies Anywhere.
As of this writing, the Movies Anywhere site is still in a holding pattern, featuring an animation and the hashtag #AnywhereIsComing. According to Gilford, customers can also access their library on the new service (Disney Movies Anywhere will be phased out).
In celebration of this exciting new digital entertainment destination, Movies Anywhere is welcoming new users with a limited-time offer to receive up to five digital movies.
To celebrate the Google partnership, you can even snag yourself five free movies: Big Hero 6, Ghostbusters (2016), Ice Age, Jason Bourne and The Lego Movie.
