  • Gucci pledges to go fur-free from 2018

The Humane Society, which supports the fur free alliance among fashion houses, said Gucci's announcement Wednesday was a "game-changer", involving "perhaps the biggest fur-free retailer announcement worldwide to date".

Speaking at the London College of Fashion, UK, on October 11, Bizzarri told the audience the decision to stop using fur in Gucci's collections shows an "absolute commitment to making sustainability an intrinsic part of our business" and that the material is "a little bit outdated".

Gucci's CEO Marco Bizzarri said: "Being socially responsible is one of Gucci's core values".

Gucci, part of Paris-based luxury conglomerate Kering (PRTP.PA), has seen its sales rise over the past two years under creative director Alessandro Michele. "I sensed that immediately on meeting Alessandro for the first time".

The brand now sells a wide selection of furs, perhaps most notably their Princetown fur-lined leather mules.

"A staggering 100 million animals a year still suffer for the fur industry, but that can only be sustained for as long as designers continue to use fur and consumers purchase it".

Joh Vinding, the alliance's chairman, said: "Gucci is taking a bold stand for animals, showing the world that the future of fashion is fur-free".

The fashion house's remaining fur clothing will be sold in an auction with the money made donated to the animal rights organisation Humane Society International and LAV, an organisation that initiates legal actions to assert animal rights. Going forward there will be a ban on mink, fox, rabbit, karakul lamb and raccoon dog fur.

HSI's president, Kitty Block, branded the company's move as "compassionate". "For this Italian powerhouse to end the use of fur because of the cruelty involved will have a huge ripple effect throughout the world of fashion". "Gucci going fur-free is a huge game-changer", she said.
