Intel Generates a New Super Conducting 17-qubit Chip for Quantum Computing

  • Intel’s new 17-qubit chip marches toward the quantum computing future

Unlike today's processors, quantum computers perform all of their tasks in parallel, and so perform much faster than silicon-based systems.

The company maintains its advances in materials science and semiconductor manufacturing can apply to quantum computing, too, potentially giving it an advantage in the field.

As for Intel, the next step will see its partner QuTech test each of the 17 qubits on the new chip individually, followed by tests created to gauge the chip's performance once those qubits are entangled and working together.

However, despite much experimental progress and speculation, there are inherent challenges to building viable, large-scale quantum systems that produce accurate outputs. Intel is just joyous about the fact that its undeniable expertise, and history in manufacturing and fabricating chips and architectures is succeeding in a new way in the phase of computing.

But, Qubits are very fragile and require extreme conditions in order to operate and store data. This quantum computing is a great level of revolution in the field of technology ahead, and it will soon be here before you might think. Classic computers encode information in regular "bits", represented by ones and zeros, but quantum computers encode information in "qubits", which can be ones, zeros or both at the same time.

Intel has announced to deliver its new superconducting 17-qubit test chip to the quantum research partner of company, QuTech in the Netherlands. And compared to wirebonded processors, a scalable interconnect scheme allows for 10 to 100 times more signals into and out of the chip.

The quantum computing team at Intel is hopeful these kinds of advancements will pave the way towards a quantum computer, but it is still a long way off. For example, Intel said Tuesday that quantum computers could simulate the complex natural world to enable advances in chemistry and molecular modeling. The collaboration spans the entire quantum system - or "stack" - from qubit devices to the hardware and software architecture required to control these devices as well as quantum applications.

"With this test chip, we'll focus on connecting, controlling and measuring multiple, entangled qubits towards an error correction scheme and a logical qubit", said professor Leo DiCarlo of QuTech.

Also, unlike others, Intel is investigating multiple qubit types. "This work will allow us to uncover new insights in quantum computing that will shape the next stage of development". The qubit in silicon technology leverages Intel's transistor expertise, where the superconducting qubits rely heavily on innovations in its packaging space. Then there's Rigetti Computing Inc., which said in March that it has raised $64 million and expects to demonstrate a machine next year that will outperform the world's largest supercomputers in some tasks.

Intel is investing not only to invent new ways of computing, but also to advance the foundation of Moore's Law, which makes this future possible.
