  • Panama ballboy becomes global hero after hilarious intervention in World Cup game

While US football fans struggle to come to grips with their team's failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, the party is yet to stop for "little" Panama.

USA's shock 2-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago, coupled with Panama's 88th minute victor from Roman Torres to beat Costa Rica, meant the team from Central America finished third in the North/Central American qualifying and have booked their place in Russian Federation.

PANAMA will make their first ever appearance in the World Cup finals after sealing qualification thanks to a 2-1 victory over Costa Rica on Tuesday night.

However, there has been some dispute over whether the team's first goal crossed the line.

As the ball came flying into the box from a corner, it came off the back side of Panamanian player Gabriel Torres and hit the inside of the post.

Goal-line technology, which is not available to CONCACAF competitions as of yet, would have proved that it wasn't a goal easily.

OneFootball.com provided footage of the phantom goal in question, where Torres' attempt to turn the ball into the net fell short despite the referee's decision to award an equaliser at the time. Even with how awful Bruce Arena's United States of America side were against Trinidad and Tobago, the worst team in the group, the USMNT would have finished third and qualified if that goal had not been given.

His 88th-minute victor allowed them to perform the most timely leapfrog, jumping from fifth place up to the third and final CONCACAF automatic qualifying spot, behind Mexico and Costa Rica.

Panama president Juan Carlos Varela called a national holiday in celebration of the remarkable achievement as some fans called for the day to be named after the heroic ballboy.
