Trump Warns Puerto Rico Weeks After Storms: Federal Help Cannot Stay 'Forever'

  • Gov. Cuomo announced that three major aid shipments totaling more than 425,000 pounds of supplies donated from New Yorkers arrived in Puerto Rico in recent days

President Donald Trump is criticizing hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, where the EPA is warning people against drinking water from wells at hazardous waste sites and power is still out for the vast majority of the the island three weeks after Maria hit.

Replying to Trump's tweet, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked the following question: "Why do you continue to treat Puerto Ricans differently than other Americans when it comes to natural disasters?" In addition, at the request of Governor Ricardo Rosselló, Governor Cuomo readied teams of more than 100 medical personnel who are prepared to deploy to Puerto Rico.

It was clear from the start that President Donald Trump's response to the two back-to-back hurricanes that decimated Puerto Rico was going to be bad.

The decimated infrastructure on Puerto Rico has made deliveries of supplies and aid almost impossible, especially to the smaller towns.

Photo Lt. Gen. Jeff Buchanan of the Army, the commander of Joint Task Force Puerto Rico, and soldiers from the Puerto Rico National Guard unloaded critical supplies in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, on Wednesday. Instead of going out of his way to turn this chaotic situation into something one would expect from the American government, Trump has chose to attack the whole island via Twitter.

The House is expected to vote this week on an emergency spending package including billions of dollars more in relief for Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida in the wake of deadly storms Maria, Harvey and Irma this hurricane season. "We want them to be safe, and sound, and secure, and we will be there every day until that happens".

If anything, that need and deserve more, not less, help. This will help the island stabilize its finances, prevent an even greater outmigration to the mainland and unleash Puerto Rico's full economic potential and capacity in a sustainable way. He has repeatedly said that seeing the devastation in person was worse than the images being shown on television.
