The lawsuit was filed in a Beijing intellectual property court, claiming infringement of three non-standard essential patents and seeking injunctive relief.

"Apple employs technologies invented by Qualcomm without paying for them", Qualcomm spokesperson Christine Trimble told Bloomberg.

Qualcomm says the patents cover power management and a Force Touch technology used in current iPhones.

Apple, of course, says the claims by Qualcomm have no merit.

The patented innovations "are a few examples of the many Qualcomm technologies that Apple uses to improve its devices and increase its profits", Trimble added.

The two companies are months into a legal dispute that centers on Qualcomm's technology licensing business. Rosenstock believes that "like [Qualcomm's] other courtroom maneuvers. this latest legal effort will fail".

Qualcomm has countered with a patent suit and argued that Cupertino, California-based Apple encouraged regulators from South Korea to the U.S.to take action against it based on false testimony.

It seems exceedingly unlikely that sales of any iPhones will be banned. The analyst further notes that a vacuum left by Apple could be filled by Chinese competitors very quickly, and believes that Qualcomm's move is aimed at getting Apple back into negotiations. It could also give Qualcomm some leverage when negotiating the outcome of those suits.

On September 29 in China, Qualcomm fired the latest salvo against Apple in the two companies' ongoing worldwide legal battle.

Things are not looking particularly good for Qualcomm. Qualcomm new lawsuit comes after being slapped with a massive $773 million fine by the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission for antitrust violations.
