  • NIA charge-sheets Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for hate speech & inciting youth for terror activities

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday said it will explore all legal options to bring Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) president and preacher Zakir Naik back to India. "Zakir Naik had defended worldwide terrorist Osama Bin Laden, who masterminded the 9/11 attack in 2001 in the United States and had termed George Bush, then U.S. president as "Number One Terrorist", says NIA in the chargesheet.

The 51-year-old televangelist fled from India on July 1, 2016, after terrorists in neighbouring Bangladesh claimed that they were inspired by his speeches. The Islamic preacher faces charges of incitement of terror activities and hate speech among youth, and money laundering.

Naik has been accused of spreading hatred by his speeches, funding terrorists and money laundering over the years.

The IRF has already been declared as an Unlawful Association by Government of India as per a notification dated November 17, 2016.

His programs on Peace TV, which he founded in 2006, was very popular among Indian Muslims; the channel was banned by the government a year ago.

The Interpol was approached against Naik after a year-long probe during which the NIA gathered evidence on his IRF and Peace TV being used to allegedly promote hatred between different religious groups.

Previously, NIA had booked Zakir Naik for waging war against the nation, intentions to outrage religious feelings and also deliberately trying to wound the religious feelings of any person. Earlier in July, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) at the request of the NIA revoked Naik's passport under the provisions of the Passport Act, 1967.NIA had issued notices against Naik three times but he did not join the investigation.

According to reports, the charge-sheet filed by the NIA at their special court includes the statements from 85 witnesses made under section 161 of Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). On June 15, the court issued proclamation order seeking Naik's appearance before it.
