ESPN's Chris Mortensen thinks a Calvin Johnson return is a 'long shot'

  • Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson warms ups before an NFL football game against the San Francisco 49ers at Ford Field in Detroit. Johnson says NFL players could get painkillers like they were

ESPN is reporting the Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars have reached out to the Lions about trading for Calvin Johnson. As far as his fit with the team, assuming he's anything close to the player he used to be, a 6'5, 237-pound wide receiver with 4.35 speed and nearly 12,000 career receiving yards would make a fine addition to literally any roster. Unless Johnson decides to put the debate on hold by coming out of retirement and playing for another team, which is apparently something two teams would be interested in.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen dropped the scoop Monday morning during an appearance on the "Mike & Mike" radio show. They're 7-1. They have only a first-round pick next year, and three (fourth-round picks).

The bad news for the teams showing interest, though, is that Johnson doesn't appear to be seeking a return to the field.

"The speculation has been the Philadelphia Eagles", Mortensen said (h/t Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice). They don't have a second- or third-round pick. As for his salary, he's still on the books for $16 million in base salary, which seems a little risky for someone who has been away from football for over a year.

"Calvin has been working out, I guess".

With the Eagles outside receivers in Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith struggling, Johnson - if he does want to play - may make some sense for the Birds. Jacksonville is kind of- their ears are perked up.

Of course, any return would require the cooperation of Johnson and there's no sign that he is interested in resuming his career, which ended after nine seasons in March 2016.
