"China will not close its doors" and will open them "even wider", he said, pledging that foreign companies in China, including American ones, would find the market "more open, more transparent and more orderly".
Trump later met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and attended a business event with Xi followed by state dinner.
But the two leaders also have their differences.
Xi smiled widely when Trump said he does not blame China for the deficit.
But Trump is not the only wild card. The hard-line speech he delivered before the South Korean National Assembly on Wednesday poured scorn on Pyongyang.
"North Korea is a country ruled as a cult", he said.
"Our children so often remind us of our shared humanity and true dignity", Trump, 71, said. "And do not try us".
"As the leader of the Free World, you sent the most powerful message that could be sent to the people of North Korea that you care - and all freedom loving people care - about their suffering under the triple Kim dictatorships", the organization wrote in a letter to the White House. At the dinner, neither man made mention of thorny issues like trade and attempts to pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
"To those nations that choose to ignore this threat or worse still, to enable it, the weight of this crisis is on your conscience", Trump said in Seoul.

President Donald Trump said in Beijing Thursday that the United States aims to change its trade relationship with China, calling it "very one-sided and unfair".

In June, Korean companies said they will make an investment and purchase USA -made products valued at combined 40 trillion won (US$35.8 billion). But it's not expected to win to any real Chinese concession on the larger structural concerns surrounding the trade imbalance between the countries. He said the two sides were still discussing whether they had "sufficient substance" to talk about.
Trump and Tillerson's comments came during Trump's second and final day in China and after lengthy meetings with Xi.
China's interests lie elsewhere.
"I don't think there's any indication that the next five years are going to be significantly different from the first", says Elizabeth Economy, a China specialist at the Council on Foreign Relations.
On the South China Sea dispute, Xi said, "the Pacific Ocean is big enough to accommodate both China and the US".
With that backdrop, it remains unclear how Trump's more measured approach to his old campaign trail villain will go over with his base, including those blue-collar voters in MI who are counting on Trump to take a hardline against China - and are still listening to Bannon. No cuddly state visit will be able to obscure the tensions there.
On Sunday, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told CNN that the White House would not interfere with the merger review. The proposed deal considered a "vertical" merger, which means the two companies in the deal are non-competitors.
