Ummar Muhammad and Tahir Khan - again cattle traders - were transporting cows from Mewat in Haryana to Bharatpur in Rajasthan, when they were stopped in the Fahari village near Alwar district.
New Delhi:Janata Dal United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav on Tuesday said lynching of a dairy farmer by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan was "unfortunate" and criticised the Centre for failing to control the menace. His family alleged that he was shot dead by cow vigilantes when he was ferrying cattle in a vehicle. These men who have been arrested are self-proclaimed gau rakshaks. The police suspect that the crowd had attacked Umar Khan and two others under the impression that they were smuggling cows.
Hardline Hindu groups have gained prominence since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014, and the protection of cows, considered holy by many in the Hindu-majority country, is a priority for them.
Rahul Prakash, Superintendent of Police, Alwar, confirmed the arrests. The first was lodged after the pick-up van with cattle was traced at Govindgarh while the second is a case of murder after Khan's relatives lodged an FIR. "There has been several such incidents when Gau Rakshaks have even stopped empty trucks and robbed the driver", said the Sarpanch. "The pick-up truck they were using was stolen from Uttar Pradesh and its numberplate belonged to a motorcycle", Rana said, adding that Tahir and Javed would be apprehended soon.
The deceased's family members are camping in Jaipur after the body was referred to SMS Hospital here from Alwar. Police officials at Govindgarh police station have clarified that a case was registered against Umar, Tahir and Javed (driver) on charges of cow smuggling.
According to Tahir, when he and Umar were on their way back home, they were attacked by 6 to 8 people. "The government should compensate his family without delay", Ummar's uncle Illiyas said. The assailants opened fire in which Ummar Khan was shot dead and Tahir Khan sustained injuries, he added.
