  • Hearing of NAB references against former PM Nawaz family adjourns till Wednesday

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar arrived today at an accountability court in connection with the trial proceedings in the references filed against them by the NAB.

The court officially began hearing of the NAB references today to record statements from witnesses including Securities and Exchange Commission Pakistan (SECP) officer Sidra Mansur and Federal Bureau Revenue's Jahangir Ahmad. She informed the judge that the appeared before the NAB Lahore team on August 18 this year and provided the required documents.

The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said the Courts had dual standards, adding they had been struggling against the double standards of Courts.

"The records that NAB has presented in court hold my signatures and thumb impressions", Mansoor told the court, adding that, among other things, the records also contained audit reports of the Sharif family's various businesses.

The hearing has been adjourned till November 22.

His counsel stated that Nawaz's pleader, Zafir Khan, will appear on the former premier's behalf during his absence.

During the hearing, Nawaz Sharif also submitted two pleas to the court.

However, the court has reserved verdict over the petitions.

The Sharifs then exited the court.

The court has summoned four another witnesses to record their statement.

Nawaz Sharif is nominated suspect in references regarding Avenfield properties, Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment, while Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (r) Safdar are nominated in reference regarding Avenfield properties alone.

Despite the light rain in the capital, several workers and leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were in and outside the court complex to welcome the party chief. At an earlier hearing, the court also approved Maryam and Safdar's bail in the Avenfiled properties case and ordered them to submit surety bonds worth Rs5 million each.

The plea was filed by Nawaz Sharif and his sons, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz. The two brothers, who are based outside the country failed to appear for any of the graft hearings.

The minister said there was no allegation or prove of corruption against Nawaz Sharif.

Meanwhile, in response to a plea filed by Nawaz in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, challenging the accountability court's dismissal of his application to club three corruption references against him and his family into one, notices had been sent to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Earlier a bench of the IHC granted Sharif's request with regard to clubbing together the three corruption references filed against him, and revoked the accountability court's Oct 19 verdict, directing it to reconsider the request.
