Earlier, 12 per cent GST on food bill was levied in non-AC restaurants and 18 per cent in the air-conditioned ones.

The GST Council, during its meeting last Friday in Guwahati, had recommended that GST rates on almost 210 items, 180 of them in the top 28 per cent tax bracket, be slashed. However, for hotels that charge Rs 7,500 or more per day as room tariff will be levied 18 per cent GST but are permitted to have Input Tax Credit.

Eating out to become cheaper from Wednesday after the GST Council Meeting led by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley revised the rates of the new national tax on November 10. With the latest decisions, GST has been cut on a host of consumer items such as chocolates, chewing gum, shampoo, deodorant, shoe polish, detergents, nutrition drinks, marble and cosmetics.

After the change, only 50 products including luxury and sin items, white goods, cement and paints, automobile, aeroplane and yacht parts have been retained in the top 28 percent slab.

Among mass consumption items watches, blade, stove, mattresses have been reduced to 18 percent from 28 percent. Price for meals with 12 percent GST was Rs 78.40. From 18 percent duty to five percent, you will spare 13 rate focuses tax on your food tax. "Six goods have come down from the 18 percent slab to 5 percent, 8 items have come down from 12 percent to 5 percent and 6 items from 5 percent to zero tax", Jaitley said.

Launched on July 1, the GST weaved 29 states into a single market with one tax rate but while traders and small business complained of increased compliance burden, voices of dissent rose on high tax rate on some common use goods. It decided that filing GSTR 3B would continuing till March 31, 2018.
