Magnitude 5.5 quake jolts South Korea

A 5.5 magnitude quake struck the southeastern city of Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday, the state weather agency said.

While the US Geological Survey says it was centered off the coast about 9.3 kilometers northwest of Pohang, state-run Korea Meteorological Administration said the epicenter was inside Pohang.

Further details are awaited.

Residents in Pohang city just 5.6 miles from the epicentre of the quake were told to evacuate. No casualties have been reported yet.

There are nuclear power plants and industrial facilities in the area.
