Rebel authorities in Yemen said on Tuesday that a Saudi-led air strike had destroyed a navigation station at Sanaa global airport, which is critical to receiving already limited aid shipments.

Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi reiterated at a news conference at United Nations headquarters in NY on Monday that closed seaports and airports will start reopening within the 24 hours promised late Sunday.

It says: "The first step in this process will be taken within 24 hours and involves reopening all the ports in areas controlled by" Yemen's internationally recognized government, which the coalition backs.

He added: "We believe that there should be a more robust verification mechanism in Hodeidah port and we want to work with the United Nations".

Despite the Saudi announcement, a top leader of Yemen's Shiite rebels on Monday vowed retaliation against the oil-rich kingdom over its blockade of his war-torn country.

However other ports, including Houthi-controlled Hodeidah - where some 80 percent of Yemen's food supplies enter - will remain closed until a United Nations verification regime is reviewed to ensure no weapons reach the Houthis, the statement said.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi movement said last week it had closed all air, land and seaports in Yemen to stem what it said was the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran.

Is Yemen Saudi Arabia's Ukraine?

But the military intervention, which has triggered widespread criticism from the global community, has left more than 10,000 people, most of which civilians, dead.

However, Mr McGoldrick said there was "no indication" yet of the blockade being lifted.

A Saudi-led coalition airstrike in Yemen's capital destroyed a navigation station at Sanaa airport, which is critical to receiving already limited aid shipments, local authorities capital said on Tuesday. In March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries launched airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request.
