  • The Barbie Doll Puts on a Hijab from the Fall of 2018

Mattel unveiled its first hijab-wearing Barbie doll on Monday, modeled after fencer Ibtihaj Muhammed, who has broken ground herself as the first U.S. Olympic athlete to compete in the head scarf. Then the toy company Mattel made a decision to transform the eternal model by creating dolls with lower height, dark skin, and a chubby body.

The prototype of the doll is the American fencing competitor Ibtihad Muhammad, who at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro won a bronze medal.

Apart from the cultural attire, the doll itself is designed after Muhammad, which means the Barbie is dark-skinned, instead of porcelain.

"Ibtihaj is an inspiration to countless girls who never saw themselves represented, and by honoring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything", Sejal Shah Miller, Barbie's vice president of global marketing, said in a statement. "This is a childhood dream come true".

Some people have cheered the move as an advancement, saying it gives more representation to Muslims, but not everyone has been so accepting. And Mattel listened to everything, everything even down to the fabric of the hijab.

Boeing and flydubai sign historic deal for 225 737 MAX Airplanes
The airline by the end of the year will have a fleet of 61 Next-Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. All variants of the jet are powered by the CFM International Leap-1B engine.

There are also some more reasonable critiques, which challenge Mattel's decision not on bigoted grounds but based on the fact that - to them - a hijab symbolizes oppression of women. That's what we have here.

First Hijab-wearing Barbie has released.

When Muhammad was young she used to make hijab out of tissue and wrap it around Barbie dolls so that they could resemble her and her siblings. I'm really excited to have this moment happen in my life and also for all these little girls now who can shop for Barbie doll that may look them, may wear a hijab like they do, or like their mom does, or like a friend does.

So, this is a "Muslim Barbie".

"Today, I'm proud to know that little girls who wear a hijab and, just as powerfully, those who don't, can play with Barbie in a headscarf", Muhammad added.
