  • Dangerous Hawaii psychiatric hospital inmate Randall Saito recaptured in California

Where he is now is not clear, but authorities say he has family in California. A spokesperson at the San Jose airport told ABC7 News that on Tuesday afternoon, "SJC's Security Officer assisted law enforcement officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and US Marshal's Office in their request to review airport security footage".

Anyone who may see Saito is warned not to approach him, and is only urged to call police with information.

"The Hawaii State Hospital is a 202-bed facility and is the only state psychiatric hospital to provide inpatient psychiatric services for court-ordered individuals within a safe and therapeutic environment", the department added.

"Because he committed murder, no matter how long ago it was, he still has the ability to commit another murder or some other violent crime", the prosecutor said.

"He is a very unsafe individual", said Wayne Tashima, a Honolulu prosecutor who argued in 2015 against Saito receiving passes to leave the hospital grounds without an escort. Randall Saito, who was acquitted of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity, left the state hospital outside Honolulu on Sunday, took a taxi to a chartered plane that took him to the island of Maui and then boarded another plane to San Jose, California, Honolulu police said.

Late Tuesday night, the Hawaii Attorney General's office charged Saito with felony escape and issued a $500,000 bench warrant for his arrest. Her body was found in her auto in a parking lot of a shopping mall, CBS News reported.

In 2000, his attorneys tried to get Saito a conditional release. He claimed Saito "fills all the criteria of a classic serial killer".

A prosecutor in Hawaii who has dealt with Saito in the past, issued a warning. The charge is considered an allegation of wrongdoing, and Saito is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty of the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
