The Los Angeles Police Department, which is investigating the incident, said the fatally struck boys were 7 and 9. One child died at the scene and the other at a hospital, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 7:25 p.m.at the intersection of Indiana Street and Whittier Boulevard, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im, who said a sheriff's vehicle was involved.

The mother remained hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's patrol vehicle on an emergency call ran onto a sidewalk, killing two small boys and critically injuring their mother, authorities said Friday. Two adults who were walking through a crosswalk sustained relatively minor injuries as a result of that collision, police said.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies were responding to a gunshot call at the time of the crash. They are expected to be released soon, Lopez said.

"The sheriff's SUV may not have taken the proper precautions before entering the intersection, which may have caused this collision and ultimately led to the serious injuries of my client", Carlos Gomez, an attorney for Adolfo Robles, a 56-year-old man injured in the crash, told KTLA.

Investigators didn't immediately say whether the patrol auto was using its lights and siren. LA County Sheriff Jim Mc Donnell told KTLA that the driver was a female deputy who was in training for patrol duties.

Luis Hernandez tells the Times that the boys were his brothers, 7-year-old Jose Luis and 9-year-old Marcos. "I just didn't believe it".

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families and all those affected by this tragic accident", a sheriff's department statement said.

After the initial crash, one of the vehicles that collided with the deputies was propelled into another vehicle.
