Authorities say a fugitive has been captured near Atlanta after escaping from the same county jail in Alabama twice within a three-week span.

Also on Monday, Vernon allegedly broke into a man's home, stole his vehicle, kidnapped him and drove to Douglasville.

Shane Anthony Vernon, 27, escaped on Sunday around 2:30 p.m. from the Coosa County, Alabama jail on Sunday, and authorities believe he's here in Georgia.

Vernon had previously broken out of the Coosa County jail on October 29 when he pulled out of his restraints while being booked for burglary and theft, the sheriff's office said.

Vernon is considered armed and unsafe. That van was later abandoned about seven miles away at the home of yet another victim.

The victim was able to make it safely to the Douglasville Police Department.

When Vernon is extradited back to Alabama, he'll be transferred first to Elmore County where a hold is in place for his arrest.

For his second escape on Sunday, Vernon crawled through the jail's ceiling and bypassed four secure doors, Coosa County Sheriff Terry Wilson said on Monday in a telephone interview.

Wilson says Vernon is to be considered armed and unsafe.

It's the second time in less than a month that Vernon has been able to get out of jail. He was recaptured the next day.

The U.S. Marshals Service is leading the search effort with the aid of state and local law enforcement agencies. An internal review of the officer's actions is underway.
