It's the first soft-top Corvette to bear the ZR1 badge since the seventies and is priced from $123,995 (£92,400) in the United States; that's a $4,000 (£3,000) premium over the coupe. The coupe, which debuted this month in Dubai, will start at $119,995.

Most importantly, the ZR1 Convertible is only 60 lb (27 kg) heavier than the coupé - consider that the power folding top uses small motors for its closing and opening mechanism and in a cabriolet, the body usually needs additional reinforcements and stiffening up.

"The ZR1 convertible is a no-compromise supercar".

The ZR1 Convertible carries forward the hardware from the standard ZR1. "Thanks to the strong structure, the suspension tuning between coupe and convertible models is identical, meaning the ZR1 convertible offers the same benchmark performance, including a top speed of over 200 miles per hour".

Thanks to an aluminum chassis that was designed from the start to be a convertible, the open-top ZR1 weighs just 60 pounds more than the coupe. All of this is routed to the rear wheels, either via a 7-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. In Track mode, a spring-loaded passive valve closes to allow virtually unrestricted exhaust flow and, we're told, a very loud noise.

And regardless of which package you get, you'll be able to drive the ZR1 from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds or less and cover the quarter mile in the high 10-second range (numbers achieved with the automatic). With the aero tweaks top speed does suffer but Chevrolet still claims it can exceed 200mph. Top speed is the same 341kmph.

Buyers can spec a Performance Package, which includes an exaggerated front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, magnetic ride control and a High Wing, which generates 430kg of downforce at the cost of some aerodynamic efficiency. GM is expected to adopt a midengine configuration for the eighth-generation Corvette, however the company has not confirmed those plans.
