"Sydney Theater Company received a complaint alleging that Mr. Geoffrey Rush had engaged in inappropriate behavior", a spokeswoman for the prestigious theater company said.

Rush said that his attempts to understand the nature of the complaint had failed: "The moment I became aware of rumours of a complaint I immediately phoned and spoke to senior management at the Sydney Theatre Company asking for clarification about the details of the statement", he said.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" star Geoffrey Rush is the latest in Hollywood to be accused of "inappropriate behavior". "These are matters that deserve forthright and objective levels of discussion", said the statement provided by his lawyer, Nicholas Pullen of HWL Ebsworth Lawyers. "In the circumstances, if such statement has been issued by the STC it is both irresponsible and highly damaging to say the least". As already stated, the Company received the complaint after Mr Rush's engagement had ended.

"At the time the complaint was made, the complainant requested that the matter be dealt with confidentially, and did not want Mr Rush notified or involved in any investigation", the statement said.

'STC complied, acting in the interest of the complainant's health and welfare'.

IDF: Settlers attacked in northern West Bank, shoot Palestinian dead
Palestinian farmers are often targets of Israeli settler aggression, with them commonly attacking Palestinians tending their land. It was not immediately clear if the Israelis coordinated their hike with the military, as is normally required in the West Bank.

"At this stage, Mr Rush can only reiterate his statement that he denies having been involved in any "inappropriate behaviour" whatsoever", the statement reads.

"He's a huge Australian name, he's an Oscar victor and he was Australian of the Year only a few years ago - controversially, not because of any behavioural questions but simply because people couldn't figure out why we gave Australian of the Year to an actor". He said he had asked the STC for details of the allegations but none had been provided.

Rush asked why the allegation had not been raised, using standard theatre practice, "during the production via stage management, the director, my fellow actors or anyone at management level". The identify of the complainant had been withheld at the request of the individual. "However, no response was forthcoming". It was not revealed if Rush is one of the those names. In 1996, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as David Helfgott in the film Shine.

But two actors who appeared in the production backed up the accuser.

He also played Captain Barbossa in Disney's "Pirates Of The Caribbean" franchise and provided the voice for Nigel the pelican in "Finding Nemo".
