Jim Nabors, the comic actor best known for his years playing Gomer Pyle, one of TV's most lovable goofs, has died at the age of 87.

After two years on the Griffith show, Nabors was given his own sitcom, "Gomer Pyle, USMC", with Gomer enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Through it all, he remained pure of heart, sunny of disposition and simple of mind.

He also was an accomplished singer, who recorded 28 albums and scored 5 gold and 1 platinum records.

He then showcased his singing and comedic talents on The Jim Nabors Hour, which lasted two seasons and featured some of his Gomer Pyle co-stars.

Nabors was so strongly identified as Gomer that it limited the roles he was offered.

He also had a substantial film career, appearing in movies, including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas alongside Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton and Cannonball Run II, again opposite Burt Reynolds.

Born June 12, 1930, Nabors hailed from Sylacauga, AL, where he sang in high school and church. From there, he went to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and worked as a film editor for a television station.

Nabors married Cadwallader in January 2013.

Nabors said he spoke freely about his relationship with close associates and coworkers, and he was very open about his sexuality while working in Hollywood.

Nabors had been a permanent resident of Hawaii since 1976, where he tended to a farm that produced macadamia nuts and flowers.

Reportedly only a liver transplant saved Nabors' life in 1994 after he contracted hepatitis B while traveling in India, and this brush with death prompted him to get involved with the American Liver Foundation. He was promoted to full corporal in 2007.
