  • A New Study Shows Cheese Might Be Good For Your Heart

On the contrary, people in the study who took advantage of cheese benefits by eating a little each day were less likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke, when compared to those who rarely eat cheese. This doesn't mean you should start eating a block of cheese, or slices of pizza every day, because cheese does have high levels of saturated fat, that is linked to high cholesterol and poor lipid profiles.

Researchers in China and New Zealand examined 15 studies from PubMed and EMBASE that involved cheese to better understand the relationship between cheese and heart disease. Cheese also has an unsaturated fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid which may affect cholesterol by lowering your bad LDL levels and raising the good HDL levels.

The findings after this research review were definitely different than expected.

Cheese, glorious cheese. When Christmas comes around, we love the pungent stuff even more than usual. They scientists pored over 15 observational studies that included more than 200000 people.

They concluded that those who regularly ate cheese cut their chances of having a stroke by 10% and chances of developing certain coronary heart diseases by 14%. The people who had the lowest risks for heart disease and stroke were those who consumed, on average, about 40 grams a day-about the size of a matchbook.

As noted in the study, cheese is also a good source of vitamins, minerals, and protein, which also may be "cardiovascular protective properties".

But it's also possible that cheese has beneficial qualities that offset the negative impact of its high saturated fat content, says Stewart.

Many types of cheese have high levels of probiotics which could lower inflammation.

"Furthermore, there was a somewhat U-shaped association between cheese consumption and overall CVD risk, with the largest risk reduction observed at cheese consumption of approximately 40 g/d (1.5 ounces)". "But on the upside, a bit of cheese on a cracker doesn't sound unreasonable".

If you're a cheese lover, you will welcome the results of this new study with open arms.

"We're always are searching for ways to minimize heart disease and reduce atherosclerosis", said Allan Stewart, director of aortic surgery at Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
