More than 400 Nigerians repatriated from Libya

Fachano told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday: "not all of them want to come back home".

Mr. Fachano said the government would continue to make efforts to save Nigerians that are trapped in Libya.

"They comprised of 65 adult females, 179 adult males, seven children and six infants".

He also confirmed that four of the returnees had medical cases and were promptly taken away on an ambulance for treatment.

He said, "The Federal government now in talks with officials of Nigeria's Charge D'Affairs in Libya to ascertain the number of Nigerians held up in Libya detention centers so as to expedite action in bringing them back home".

The Tuesday returnees arrived aboard a BURQA Airline Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration number, 5N-DMG from Libya.

Also on ground to receive them was the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa and officials of other government agencies.

He said the federal government has so far repatriated 3250 from Libya in recent times.

Beyond identification, Onyeama said most of the Nigerian victims were trapped in areas not officially recognised by the United Nations.

In addition, the continental body asked member states to identify their nationals, to issue emergency travel documents, to provide flight and landing authorization, and to facilitate their reintegration.

The repatriation of the stranded Nigerians which started in 2016 is being done in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) which has provided the chartered aircraft to convey the returnees.

"We also ensure that we are up to date with the number of Nigerians in specific detention camps".

He called on the United Nations to help out by sponsoring repatriation flights, provide food and health materials for the migrants.

Underlining the need for all actors to cooperate with the Government of National Accord of Libya, including assisting the country to build capacity to secure its borders and end human trafficking, the Council urged ratification and implementation of worldwide instruments that countered such trafficking by all Member States.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, says some Nigerians in Libya have refused to come home despite the ongoing slave trade.

"He is in Abuja already and during the period of the consultations, arrangements have been made for him to address press conferences on the issue".
