  • Hero police officer Omar Delgado 45 has been let go from the Eatonville force

Officer Omar Delgado, with the Eatonville Police Department, was one of the first officers to respond to the shooting at Pulse, pulling people to safety.

The Eatonville Town Council voted Tuesday night to pay some of Officer Omar Delgado's accrued sick time before he is dismissed from the police force on December 31.

The hero officer says he still wakes up from the same nightmare every night, more than a year and a half after the shooting.

If Delgado had been allowed to work another six months, he would have become vested in the pension system - that would allow for him to collect 64% of his $38,500 annual salary with benefits for life, Town Clerk Cathy Williams told the Sentinel.

He said a doctor found him unfit to return to full duty because of post-traumatic stress disorder, and Delgado suspects that was a factor in his dismissal. Delgado and the officers around him dive for the ground, unable to tell where the shots are coming from or at whom they're being fired.

Delgado and his supporters plan to address the council during Tuesday night's town hall meeting.

Delgado returned to patrol duty around a month after the shooting, which left 49 dead and at least 68 injured, but realized that he was too traumatized from what he'd witnessed to continue.

"Just let me get vested and I will be more than happy to pack up my troubles and leave", he said.

Delgado has been with the department for 9 1/2 years. Instead, he will now receive only 42 percent of his salary starting at age 55, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Delgado says the department informed him they needed to replace him because they require an additional officer on patrol, USA Today reports.

"Most of that is confidential, so I won't be able to say anything about that". "It's a small town".

'I never thought I would have gotten to this point.

Delgado said he doesn't understand why he's losing his job. "I didn't think I was going to be treated this way". Now he will be terminated just six months before he would have earned his pension for being on the force for 10 years. "But some pictures are bigger than we all know". He saved my life and for them to just do what they're doing to him in front of my face is a slap to my face as well, ' Colon told WFTV. "He did his job that night on June 12 so they should have his back 100 percent totally and just be there for whatever he needs".
