By 4 a.m. Tuesday, Virginia Padilla's ranch was in the direct path of the fast-moving Creek Fire in Southern California.

The devastating blaze destroyed at least 30 homes and prompted mandatory evacuations that affected an estimated 150,000 residents, according to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Firefighters are making some gains as they continue to douse the Creek Fire, which scorched thousands of acres in the Sunland-Tujunga and Sylmar areas. The other 10 homes were within Los Angeles city limits, according to Stewart.

Patricia Padilla, the owner of the ranch, said she agonized over leaving the horses, but the firemen who knocked at her door and told her to evacuate had made it clear that it was a matter of life and death that she and her family leave immediately.

The 210 interchange with the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway was also closed. Evacuations were initially ordered in the area north of the Foothill Freeway from Glenoaks Boulevard on the west to the border with La Crescenta on the east. Once those shelters reached capacity, pet owners were directed to take their large animals to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
