Ramaphosa, who is vying with Zuma for leadership of the ANC and, therefore, the country, made the remarks during a radio interview on Thursday night.

The victor of the party race will be well placed to become the country's new president in 2019.

"It must be the most hard decision a woman has to make.so yes, I would believe her".

Radio host Redi Tlhabi has since penned a book titled: Khwezi: The Remarkable Story of Fezekile Ntsukela Kuzwayo, detailing Khwezi's life story.

Ramaphosa, who has been Zuma's deputy since in 2014, is competing with Zuma's ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to become the ANC leader at a party conference starting on December 16.

She said she was raped in a spare bedroom of Zuma's Johannesburg home in November 2005.

In September 2006, Zuma stood trial for the alleged rape of Khwezi but he was found not guilty and acquitted.

The Pretoria High Court ruled that President Zuma was "clearly conflicted" by outstanding allegations against him and should therefore not have been allowed to appoint the national director of public prosecutions Shaun Abrahams.

The president's office on Friday responded to Ramaphosa's comments, saying in a statement that the presidency affirms "the primacy of the courts as the final arbiters in disputes in society".
