The priestess, named in Japanese media as 58-year-old Nagako Tomioka was on the way to the shrine and was attacked when stepping out of her vehicle.

Two women were killed and another person was injured in a stabbing incident at a shrine in Tokyo, with the male suspect appearing to have committed suicide, Japanese authorities said on Friday.

Also, a woman aged in her 30s who was with Shigenaga, attacked and stabbed the driver of the auto with a Japanese sword, police said.

The 58-year-old Nagako was later pronounced dead with a "deep" stab wound to her chest along with a laceration to the back of her neck.

At around 8:35 p.m., police received a distress call about a woman wielding a sword violently on a road near Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine.

After the attack, the pair then moved to an area near the residential compound on the shrine's leafy grounds.

According to an acquaintance of a family member, Shigenaga was the chief priest of the shrine until he was dismissed about 10 years ago. The driver suffered injuries to his right arm and chest, though they were not life-threatening.

At some point thereafter, Shigenaga fatally stabbed his girlfriend in the chest and abdomen.

Shigenaga sent a threatening letter to his sister in 2006, saying he would "send her to hell", the Sankei newspaper said.

The shrine, established in 1627, is known for its annual Fukagawa Hachiman festival, one of Tokyo's three major festivals from the Edo period.

The four victims were believed to be associated with the shrine.
