  • Archaeologists have discovered two ancient tombs in the southern city of Luxor in Egypt said the country’s Antiquities Ministry

Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Khaled el-Anani announced on Saturday the discovery of two tombs in the ancient Qurna area west of Luxor.

The ministry said one tomb has a courtyard lined with mud-brick and stone walls and contains a six-meter burial shaft leading to four side chambers.

The opening of the tombs was announced at an global conference attended by the governor of Luxor, the minister of social solidarity, the director-general of the worldwide Monetary Fund, members of the global media, foreign ambassadors, members of parliament, and Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany.

Since Kampp's discovery, "both tombs were left untouched" until an Egyptian archaeological mission started work.

Authorities hope such finds can attract more foreign visitors, to revive a tourism industry hit hard by unrest after the 2011 uprising and recent extremist attacks.

'Studies reveal that the tomb was reused in antiquity, ' it said.

Most of the items discovered in Kampala 161 are fragments of wooden coffins. But it's the first time to enter inside the two tombs'.

"The discovery was a joint effort of Ministry of Antiquities and Luxor Governorate to promote tourism and ancient Egyptian antiquities", he added.

The wall paintings, engravings and inscriptions found in Tomb Kampp 161 suggest that it could be dated to the era between the reign of King Amenhotep II and the one of King Thutmose IV.

Afterward, Anani headed to a nearby site where the famous Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is located to publicly open for the first time the temple's main sanctuary, which is known as the "Holy of Holies".
