  • Palestinian protesters run during clashes with Israeli troops at a protest against U.S. President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

The snub over the US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital came after Egypt's Coptic Church on Saturday also cancelled an upcoming meeting with Pence in protest against Washington's move on Jerusalem.

The U.S. policy change on Jerusalem puts it "on the side of occupation" and exempts it from a mediation role in the peace process, the Arab League said in a statement. He called Trump's declaration "null and void".

In Paris, hundreds rallied against a visit by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and a planned visit to the Middle East by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is already getting a cold reception.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has strongly condemned Trump's move, which he described as a violation of United Nations resolutions. "Put the capital of Israel in NY". Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state.

Protesters burnt tyres, American and Israeli flags and an effigy of Mr Trump in front of a barricade that had been erected by police about a kilometre away from the United States embassy itself.

The Foreign Ministry stated that Turkey was concerned about Palestinian casualties sustained during the protests.

CGTN's Adel El-Mahrouky reports from Cairo. Palestinian officials said Pence had been due to meet Abbas on December 19.

Palestinian militants launched at least three rockets towards Israeli towns from Gaza after dark on Friday and Israel said it responded with air strikes that targeted a weapons depot, a military compound and two weapons manufacturing facilities.

Israeli forces retaliated against the missile attacks from the Hamas-controlled enclave, bombing four of its weapon factories and storage facilities, killing two Hamas members.

The assailant was identified by police as a 24-year-old Palestinian from the occupied West Bank.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the guard was seriously wounded and his attacker arrested.

Hours before he left Israel, thousands marched in Tel Aviv to protest against his government for the second successive week.
