  • Kenya opposition postpones Raila Odinga's 'treasonable' swearing in

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has chose to postpone his controversial swearing-in ceremony, slated for Tuesday, following the intervention of foreign diplomats.

National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna has advised NASA leader Raila Odinga, his deputy Kalonzo Musyoka and the coalition founder Musalia Mudavadi on duties of NRM and the NASA coalition at this time. The veteran politician had pulled out of the national election won by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

NASA said the decision was made after "consultations and engagement with a wide range of national and global interlocutors" without naming any specific parties.

Kenya's attorney general has said holding the alternative inauguration would amount to "treason" - a crime punishable by death - although Kenya has not executed anyone for 30 years.

City claim victory in Manchester derby
Given that Pep Guardiola's side are yet to lose a league game this season it will require a sensational slump in form for City to lose the title race.

NASA said it was aware that the postponement will be a disappointment to Kenyans who were looking forward to the day.

"We wish to thank the Government and people of Mombasa County who had graciously offered to host the event", added the statement. Specifically, we wish to reiterate that any national dialogue must have electoral justice on the agenda.

Odinga had, however, remained adamant that the ceremony would go on as Kenyatta on Saturday declared that he would not hold any dialogue. There was 39 percent overall voter turnout in October, leading many to ask whether Kenyatta had earned a mandate.

At least 58 people have died during violent clashes since the August vote, and the country is still deeply split.
