Antoine Griezmann has apologised for any offence caused after posting an image of himself on social media with his face painted black as part of an National Basketball Association party costume on Sunday.

More than 20 minutes after that post, he added: "I recognise it is clumsy on my part".

The France worldwide attracted criticism after posting an image on Twitter of himself dressed as a Harlem Globetrotter, wearing a full basketball kit, an afro wig and black body and face paint in a picture captioned "80's party", along with an emoji indicating joyous laughter. "If I offended some people I'm sorry", Griezmann wrote. He is seen wearing a wig and holding a basketball in the photo which had "NBA 69 ALLSTARS" on the jersey.

The above post was deleted, and the apology soon followed. U.K., was among those to criticize Griezmann.

Piers Morgan quickly gave his take on the situation, quote-tweeting Griezmann's image along with the caption: "And Overseas Racially Insensitive Imbecile of the Year goes to".

However, Atleti will be able to register players again in the January transfer window, so Griezmann could decide it would now be acceptable for him to leave as the club could bring in a replacement.

According to Fox Sports, Griezmann is expected to be moved by Atlético Madrid to another Spanish squad, FC Barcelona.

United reportedly believe the Welsh forward is open to a return to the Premier League and Madrid could sell if a hefty transfer bid is lodged.
