Trump had on January 2, said: "I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5 p.m".

Finally, Trump was the victor of Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom.

The runner-up for this category was Trump, for threatening to "open-up" US libel laws, sue news outlets and review broadcast licenses.

Trump was named runner-up in CPJ's "Most Thin-Skinned" category, losing to Erdoğan. Since the start of his presidency campaign, Trump has been labeling legitimate news organizations as "fake news" in response to their critical reporting about his government.

"He regularly attacks outlets and individual journalists on Twitter and in speeches, calling them 'sad, ' 'failing, ' or 'garbage, ' " the committee wrote of Trump.

The CPJ has named President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as victor while Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as runner-up in this category.

The CPJ came up with the remark after five days in response to Trump's "announcement via Twitter about his planned "fake news" awards on January 3". "The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!"

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is recognising world leaders who had attacked the freedom of press, according to Committee to Protect Journalists.

In this category, the CPJ has recognised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as victor while US President Donald Trump as runner-up. The CPJ's hopes for Suu Kyi's approach to the press were dashed this year as journalists continued to be imprisoned and obstructed while attempting to report on what the United Nations has called the "ethnic cleansing" of the Rohingya minority group.

According to the CPJ, Trump's apparent disregard for the first amendment is his most obvious and repeated offence, to the point where foreign countries have adopted Trump's "fake news" refrain to describe unflattering coverage.

Erdogan was also the victor of the Most Outrageous Use of Terror Laws Against the Press for leading a country that has jailed at least 73 journalists.

"As Trump and other Western powers fail to pressure the world's most repressive leaders into improving the climate for press freedom, the number of journalists in prison globally is at a record high".

In 2017, CPJ confronted new threats to a free press in the United States, the organization stated, noting that they expanded their research and advocacy, including efforts to get the USA government to stand up for journalists and press freedom. "When Trump denigrates the news media and threatens libel suits against journalists, it sends the message to other leaders that it's acceptable to attack the press". His government recently ordered worldwide news outlets including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to register as foreign agents (in response to a parallel move by the U.S.), and blocked their journalists from entering Parliament.

Chinese government has been using combination of traditional censorship and internet controls to keep the media in line.

"While previous US presidents have each criticized the press to some degree, they have also made public commitments to uphold its essential role in democracy, at home and overseas", the committee wrote.

The organisation said on Monday (8 January) the US President claimed the top prize for "overall achievement in undermining global press freedom" and that while Russian Federation and China exerted a stronger grip on their national media, Trump was the overall victor.
