  • Joe Arpaio, controversial sheriff pardoned by Trump, enters Arizona Senate race

Joe Arpaio, a former Arizona sheriff known for his tough stance on illegal immigration and who received a criminal pardon from President Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday that he would run for the U.S. Senate.

Arpaio was found a year ago guilty of criminal contempt of court for intentionally disobeying a federal judge's 2011 order to stop his traffic patrols that targeted immigrants.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is pictured waiting for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during a campaign event in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S. October 29, 2016.

Arpaio, 85, is seeking the Republican nomination in the race to replace Jeff Flake, a fellow GOPer who is leaving the Senate.

"Oh, I would have a lot of fun", Arpaio replied.

Arpaio also told supporters in a fundraising email that he filed the paperwork to run in Arizona's Republican primary in late August. "You know what, I'll make a prediction: I think he's going to be just fine, OK?" But I would not [be] doing this if I thought that I could not win.

"What ego? You guys forgot me the day I left office anyway. It's tough. It's a tough decision", Arpaio added.

Mr Arpaio said immigrants should be proud of where they come from and that, "everybody would be happy, you deport them and then let them come back with all their education here". Arpaio refused, and in July of 2017, he was found guilty of criminal contempt of court.

Convicted of criminal contempt in 2017, Arpaio, now 85, received a presidential pardon in August and has since been working to remove the conviction from his record so it can not be used against him in potential future legal actions.

Like Moore, he will run as a Total Trumper and bask in Trump's support.

Rep. Martha McSally hasn't officially announced she is running but in November she told her Republican colleagues that she has plans to do so. "There's no rubber stamps", Arpaio said.

Arpaio will challenge former state Sen.

Twitter also condemned Arpaio for his misdemeanor convictions, which many said should disqualify him from being a senator. And conservative Kelli Ward is already in the race - setting up another showdown between the establishment-backed candidate in McSally and anti-establishment forces after a similar battle cost the GOP a Senate seat in Alabama.

Doocy was eager to help cast Arpaio as an acolyte of Trump, who receives nearly nothing but fawning coverage on Fox & Friends, a show he regularly live-tweets.

"He's saying that I'm not going to last more than a month, that I'll leave, but what about him leaving?" He later defended the timing from critics who said it seemed like the administration was burying the news during a disaster: "In the middle of a hurricane, even though it was a Friday evening, I assumed the ratings would be far higher than they would be normally".
