  • Israeli forces are seen near a border fence between the Israeli-occupied side of the Golan Heights and Syria

The statement said the Israeli warplanes fired at the targets in Syria from inside Lebanon's airspace, while the missiles were launched from the occupied Golan Heights.

However, the Israeli army has refused to give any comments on the reported incident.

The latest strikes come as the government steps up its offensive against the country's last rebel-held areas.

The nature of the attack was not immediately clear. "We will cut off Israel's arms of terror and restore security and stability on all Syrian lands".

Syrian state news agency SANA also reported that Israeli jets and missiles struck regime positions overnight northeast of Damascus.

Government forces backed up by Russian air power are in the midst of conducting an operation to gain a foothold in the southeast of Idlib province.

Either regime or Russian aircraft were responsible for the raids, the most deadly of which killed 13 civilians including seven children in the Hammuriyeh district of Eastern Ghouta, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Syrian Foreign Ministry claims in the letter that Israel is supporting terrorist organizations in Syria with United States approval in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Idlib, which shares its border with Turkey, is a major rebel stronghold.

The government has escalated its attacks on Idlib, which is designated a de-escalation zone, following nearly two weeks of battles with al-Qaida-linked militants in southern Idlib and adjacent territory in northern Hama.

Troops are advancing towards Abu al-Zuhour airbase, about 14km (nine miles) away, which rebels captured when they seized control of most of the province in 2015, BBC wrote.

On this occasion, Syria says one missile was intercepted and destroyed, while others "fell near one of the military posts, causing only material damage".
