  • Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee and Meryl Streep as Katharine Graham in

In a key moment in Steven Spielberg's mesmerizing journalism drama "The Post", Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) is on a nighttime phone call, with several powerful men in her ear telling her, conflictingly, what she should do.

Steven Spielberg's movie The Post is being hailed as a timely reminder about press freedom, democracy, whistle-blowing and government lies. This film drips with urgent and authentic storytelling, and I would expect nothing less.

The Daily Caller reached out to the White House to verify the report, but have yet to receive a response. Continuing that tradition, sources say the Trump White House has been fed a steady diet of new releases.

She's the virtuous front-and-centre of The Post, played by Meryl Streep with Oscar-wooing authority as a leader for whom greatness is thrust upon rather than sought. Tom Hanks is more of a charming scoundrel type and Spielberg wisely uses his nearly superhuman likability to round off any potential rough edges.

One would think The Post had been created in a lab for the sole objective of snagging Oscar nominations. Hanks fares a little less well as Ben Bradlee, mainly because you can feel Hanks straining his muscles to act a little scummy and cynically, and he doesn't quite pull it off, especially given how he alters the register of his voice. Hanks and Streep give such confident, old-fashioned movie star performances that while you may never forget that you're watching Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, you'll also remember why exactly they're Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Vastly more ad-starved publications now live perpetually on the knife's edge that, for Graham in The Post, lasts only as long as before the closing of her round of financing.

Pointing out that she does not have Twitter or Facebook accounts, she added: "I really had to think".

In his interview with Hollywood Reporter in December, Hanks said, "Individually we have to decide when we take to the ramparts". Her decision to hire Bradlee has met with only limited success, and the paper is still struggling to establish itself as a major player in Washington, D.C., much less the country. "You don't take to the ramparts necessarily right away, but you do have to start weighing things". After all, The Post might be out to criticise Trump, but like the US President, it just can't stop letting you know what a big deal it is. In turn, Trump derided Streep in a series of tweets, calling her "over-rated" and a "Hillary flunky".

The man who derides the "fake news" media and claims it's unfair to the White House wants to see a movie that champions the free press in a battle over a president. Opens Jan. 4 at Pacific Place; opens in additional theaters Jan. 12. "Kellyanne loved it, too, and danced all night with [Post co-writer] Josh Singer", Pascal told THR earlier this week. "Being at a table filled with men and being the only woman trying to speak up...was something that felt very interesting, and [there was] just something about her that I couldn't get out of my head". When characters declare that their articles provide a contrast to a politician's formulated public image and how controversial news items need to be reported no matter what, the film is blatantly tipping its hat to present day events.
