He tweeted: "Absurd ban on Daily Mail by Virgin!"

Pro-Trump editorials and a host of public policy differences are too much for the founder of the Virgin Group to handle.

In an internal memo, employees had raised concerns 'about the Mail's editorial position on issues such as immigration, LGBT rights and unemployment'.

The Mail's circulation won't be badly hit by losing distribution on the trains; it sold almost 1.4 million papers daily in November, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, and Virgin Trains accounted for just 70 per day, according to the paper.

"Oh for goodness sake".

This has come after Virgin said it would not sell the newspaper on its west coast mainline as it was "not compatible" with its brand or beliefs.

Virgin said on Tuesday it regularly reviewed products sold on its trains, and "after listening to feedback from our people" chose to stop stocking copies of the Daily Mail in November. "We won't be stocking the Daily Mail for sale or as a giveaway".

"We've decided that this paper is not compatible with the VT brand and our beliefs", it said.

A spokesman for Virgin Trains said he "did not think" Branson had any personal involvement in the decision to remove the paper from Virgin Trains.

The Daily Mail hit back at Virgin Trains, saying it was "disgraceful" that the company had announced it was "censoring the choice of newspapers it offers to passengers" when the taxpayer was being forced to bail out Virgin's East Coast franchise.

"Why doesn't Virgin Trains treat its customers like grown-ups and allow them to choose [their paper]", Pierce added.

Virgin Trains is a different franchise to Virgin Trans East Coast but both are backed by Stagecoach and Virgin.

The animosity between Virgin, Branson, and the Mail is nothing new - and it has been intense in recent months.

The move from Virgin follows on from a dispute between the Daily Mail and Paperchase after the retailer pulled a promotion from Mail's front page following social media complaints from customers.

In October, Mail columnist Sarah Vine wrote a column connecting Branson to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, accusing him of "overstepping the mark" in his interactions with women and suggesting that he ought to apologise.

Adding: "The Mail had the first gay sports editor".

The Stop Funding Hate campaign also has its detractors and has been accused of "harassing advertisers".
