Facebook makes friends a priority in the News Feed

  • Twitter's share price jumps after Facebook's news feed shake up

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook is making these changes because he is concerned about his legacy and that of the company he founded.

Matt Navarra, director of social media at technology news site The Next Web, said publishing brands that were too reliant on Facebook for audience would have concerns about their bottom line.

Millions of people are being harassed, unfairly attacked, and maligned on Facebook worldwide. So will the publishers of fake news get a leg up on legitimate outlets? Children are being bullied and some, sadly, have committed suicide over posts on Facebook. In Groups, people often interact around public content.

Based on this, we're making a major change to how we build Facebook. It has our money and we have no legal recourse.

European Union competition chief Margrethe Vestager on Friday (Saturday NZ Time) said allowing advertisers to tailor political content to personal tastes on social media such as Facebook was a danger to democracy, according to interview in Vienna's Der Standard newspaper. But a feeling among users that they're seeing less personal news from friends and family and more public posts has grown as the platform has increasingly catered to business and organizations.

Facebook Inc, seeking to calm creators of articles and video after announcing a change in how their work will be promoted in its news feed, sent an email pledging to help them adapt.

That data coincides with Facebook'scrackdown on clickbait, those sensational posts that exclaim, "You won't believe what happens next!" or "See what this Hollywood star looks like now!"

He called it a win-win for Facebook, users and companies like his, as it will likely increase the incentive for marketers to spend, and push up quality and trust for users. A new page will open which will show up, click on "Prioritize who to see first".

Facebook makes drastic changes for "more meaningful" News Feed The biggest social media network in the world is overhauling its News Feed to "spark conversations" instead of promoting businesses.

Although users will still be able to post links to fake news articles and share those posts with their friends under the new system, stories that garner lots of interactions will now be prioritized on a user's News Feed, while factual news that debunks the fake news will be deprioritized. For users who rely on Facebook for news, even if they don't comment or share brand- and media-created content, it will come as unwelcome news.

Facebook wants to keep deciding for you what you see, so maybe it's a good time to decide, for yourself, to get your news in a more reliable way. Video and other public content have exploded on Facebook in the past couple of years. We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health.

We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren't just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that he expects this will mean people spend less time on Facebook, but he hopes the time they do spend "will be more valuable".

Numerous meaningful interactions taking place beneath Zuckerberg's post asked that more power be given to the user to decide what shows up in their feed, or to give users the option to only see the most recent posts. Since then, annual sales have soared from US$5.1 billion to an estimated US$40.2 billion a year ago - and the news feed has become increasingly crowded with advertisements and posts from brands and publications.
