Simon Bramhall, the British surgeon who branded his initials onto patients' livers during transplant surgeries at least twice, has been ordered to do 120 hours of community service and pay £10,000 (more than $13,000).

Bramhall, 53, used an argon beam coagulator, which seals bleeding blood vessels with an electric beam, to mark his initials on the organs.

Bramhall resigned from his job at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital after another surgeon found "SB" branded on a failed donor liver in 2014.

Bramhal is due to be sentenced by Judge Paul Farrer QC on Friday morning.

Bramhall pleaded guilty in December to two counts of assault by beating after pleading not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Judge Paul Farrer QC, who said Bramhall would also carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, told the defendant: "Both of the (transplant) operations were long and hard".

The court heard Simon Bramhall was "extremely sorry" and wanted to apologise to the patient.

"What you did was an abuse of power and a betrayal of trust that these patients had invested in you", the judge said.

A White House official said staffers had consulted with Trump after his initial tweets opposing the administration's stance. Contradictory early morning tweets by President Donald Trump sparked confusion prior to the House vote .

"Both of the operations were long and hard".

Simon Bramhall, 53, seared his initials on a patient's liver after conducting a hard transplant in a "naive and foolhardy" attempt to relieve tension, a court heard.

'I accept that on both occasions you were exhausted and stressed and I accept that this may have affected your judgment.

Opening the facts of the case against Bramhall, Tony Badenoch QC, prosecuting, said one of the surgeon's victims had been left feeling "violated" and suffering psychological harm. "Why did he think that it was appropriate to do this to me?" A picture of the 4cm-high scrawl was taken on a mobile phone.

"Because of my ordeal, my trust in doctors has been destroyed".

A nurse who saw the initialling queried what had happened and Bramhall was said to have replied: 'I do this'. "He also said that in hindsight this was naive and foolhardy - a misjudged attempt to relieve the tension in theatre", Badenoch reportedly said in court. I genuinely believe that the failure of the liver was due to the actions of Simon Bramhall burning his initials on to it. Speaking to the press at the time, he said marking his initials on to his patients' livers had been a mistake.

Bramhall worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for 12 years before he quit.
