Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya has given an exclusive interview to RT, sharing her analysis of the recently-released transcript of Fusion GPS' co-founder's testimony in the US Senate and the infamous "Trump dossier". "Just filed a defamation action against @BuzzFeedNews for publishing the lie filled document on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and me", he wroteon Twitter.
"But a year of government inquiries and blockbuster journalism has made clear that the dossier is unquestionably real news", he wrote.
President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael D. Cohen, filed a defamation lawsuit against Fusion GPS, the research firm behind the controversial dossier prepared by a former British spy which suggested Russian Federation had potentially compromising information on Trump and which alluded to possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow.
Cohen also claimed that Fusion GPS was reckless with the Russian dossier by allowing the media, who had the intention of creating breaking news about President Trump's candidacy, to have access to it.
In the complaint, which is filed in New York Supreme Court against BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith as well as reporters Ken Bissinger, Miriam Elder and Mark Schoofs, Cohen's attorney argues that the allegations are not true.
"The dossier is, and continues to be, the subject of active investigations by Congress and intelligence agencies. It was presented to two successive presidents, and has been described in detail by news outlets around the world", BuzzFeed News spokesperson Matt Mittenthal said in a statement.
"We strongly believed that publishing the disputed document whose existence we and others were reporting was in the public interest", he wrote in an op-ed article in The New York Times.
Compiled by ex-British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, the dossier contains opposition research on Trump that the private intelligence firm Fusion GPS sought to provide other Republicans before Trump clinched the party's nomination.
"The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation into potential collusion and obstruction of justice", Feinstein said in a statement. "Consistent with the intended objective of "oppo research" to publicly discredit its target, Steele's briefings were created to generate interest in the Dossier and secure its eventual public dissemination".
The lawsuit says that BuzzFeed published the unverified allegations "without attempting to determine the veracity of these reports with plaintiff himself".
A dossier containing Russian disinformation on Donald Trump, which was paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, was used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to obtain a warrant to spy on then-candidate Donald Trump's team, reports an award-winning national security reporter.
FBI CANNOT (after all of this time) VERIFY CLAIMS IN DOSSIER OF RUSSIA/TRUMP COLLUSION. And he previously published images of his passport to show that he could not have been in the Czech Republic at the time the dossier alleges he was meeting a Russian official in Prague.
With the filings, Cohen becomes the closest person to the President to take on the dossier's explosive claims in court.
During a news conference on Wednesday, President Trump said that it "seems unlikely" that he'd give an interview to Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the possible coordination between Trump's campaign and the Russian government (BBC).
