  • Stalking case Not opposing decision as of now says Varnika Kundu on Vikas Barala‚Äôs bail

Hours after Vikas Barala, the son of a senior BJP leader, was granted bail in a case of stalking and attempted abduction, the victim Varnika Kundu said that she would not oppose the decision "as of now", reported news agency ANI.

On January 9, Varnika was grilled by Barala's counsel for five hours and asked almost 500 questions about her personal life - from the friends she has and to whether her mother had been told of the incident when it took place, as per news report. Her cross-examination concluded in the district courts in Chandigarh.

While accepting his bail plea, Justice Lisa Gill warned Vikas not to try to influence the trial, going on in a Chandigarh court.

Speaking to NDTV in August a year ago, Ms Kundu had said she would like to see a change in the status of women in India. The two men, who were driving an SUV, were allegedly drunk at the time and, according to Varnika, tried several times to force her auto to stop.

Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Santosh Barala, was accused of stalking Varnika Kundu, the daughter of an IAS officer.

Barala had moved the high court in November, after a local court denied him bail for the fourth time.

His petition for bail was dismissed four times by the trial court.

They were released on bail later as the police had booked them under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Charges were framed against Vikas Barala and his 27- year-old friend, Ashish Kumar, in connection with the case, which had triggered widespread outrage and a spate of protests across the country.
