Man Kills His Mother After Blaming Her For Broken Video Gaming Headset

A man was arrested in a homicide investigation after police say he killed his mom during a dispute over a video game headset.

Police located his vehicle in Riverbank and took him into custody without further incident.

Lydia Nicholson was 68 years old at the time, survived by his father and her husband; 81 year old Loren Nicholson.

Police say 28-year-old Matthew Nicholson was alone in his room late Thursday when he started raging, yelling out in anger, after losing in a video game. Nicholson then blamed her for the broken headset and threatened to kill both his mother and father.

According to the police, Nicholson was yelling in his bedroom while he was playing video games, and his mother went to check on him.

Nicholson shot his mother in the head and fled to a relative's home before he was later arrested during a traffic stop, police said.

He faces a homicide charge and has been booked into the Stanislaus County Jail, where he is being held on no bail. "This house has always been open to friends and family and it's always been a family atmosphere".

Lydia worked and volunteered in local schools.

Nicholson worked at Christine Sipherd Elementary School in Modesto, but left previous year, Jamie Trevino, who says her kids go to the school, said in a Facebook comment. "Speechless", said Ron Kutzman, a neighbor of the Nicholson family.
