  • Pope avoids home country Argentina on latest Latin American tour

"The only thing I could think of adding were the words "the fruit of war"," Francis said, referring to a caption put on the back of the image. The Argentine pope is almost a native son, having studied in Chile during his Jesuit novitiate and he knows the country well, but Chileans give him the lowest approval rating among the 18 Latin American nations in the survey.

It is estimated that more than 60% of Chile's population identifies itself as Christian, and 45% belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.

The Church in Chile has been plagued by protests, many centering around the case of Father Fernando Karadima a once-popular Chilean priest convicted by the Church in 2011 of sexually abusing minors but, controversially, not laicized. Residents of the southern city of Osorno vehemently object to Francis' decision to appoint Juan Barros in 2015 as bishop of the diocese there and have said they plan to protest his arrival in Santiago.

Barros has denied any knowledge of the abuse.

Thousands lined the streets of Santiago to get a glimpse of Francis after he arrived Monday night, though the crowds were notably thin compared to previous visits to other Latin American capitals.

Over the next three days, Pope Francis is scheduled to celebrate Mass in Santiago, the southern city of Temuco and the northern city of Iquique.

Francis is also planning to meet with indigenous groups to highlight their struggles.

The Mapuche group is not without controversy.

But the visit comes as some radical Mapuche groups have been staging violent protests, occupying and burning farms, churches and lumber trucks to demand the return of their land. He and others inside the Vatican speak openly of a Chilean church "in crisis" as a result, a remarkable admission of the scandal's toll on a church that wielded such political clout that it helped stave off laws legalizing divorce and abortion until recently.

Soon after surviving the impeachment, Kuczynski pardoned Fujimori, who has served less than half of his 25-year sentence for corruption and human rights abuses.

"The visit has been planned so the pope sees as little of the reality as possible", Diaz said. Burke, the Vatican spokesman, did not say who they were or why they were chosen, but said they will present a letter to Pope Francis during the meeting.

During a previous trip to Latin America Francis called corruption "the plague, it's the gangrene of society". "Pope Francis: you're not welcome to Araucania".

Pope Francis has spoken about this in his encyclical "Laudato Si'", and in October 2017 he announced that a Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian region will be held in Rome in October 2019.

"Freedom to all the political prisoners of the world!" His trip to Colombia in September was his third visit to the continent as pope.
