  • Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov looks on at the start of two days of closed-door nuclear talks at the United Nat

Russia's top diplomat warned the US that it risks "catastrophic consequences" if it tries to resolve the North Korea crisis through military means, and said neither Moscow nor Beijing supports the Washington-backed summit on the crisis in Vancouver.

The U.S. resorts to illegitimate measures in a bid to stop its influence on the worldwide arena from shrinking, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

The Russian government has broadly supported sanctions on North Korea's regime in the past as a way of curbing its nuclear military program.

The sides now have a 120-day deadline to reach an agreement.

"The actions, we can see now, demonstrate that the United States does not want to keep territorially integrated Syria", the minister said.

However, the expansion of these talks from a three-nation summit with Russia, China and Pakistan in December 2016 to an 11-nation gathering, involving Central Asian states, Iran, India and Afghan representatives in April 2017, suggests that Moscow's selective engagement strategy with the Taliban is gaining traction.

During the campaign, Trump railed that it was "one of the worst deals I have ever witnessed" and vowed to ditch it when he became president or renegotiate it.

In American politics continues to prioritize "psychology of exclusivity" which is a common factor in Obama's policy and Trump, Lavrov said. "The reality is that Iran has been fulfilling all its obligations under the JCPOA, which has been regularly verified by the IAEA's director general", the Russian top diplomat stressed, adding that "the International Atomic Energy Agency has not voiced a single concern in relation to Iran's obligations under the nuclear deal".

In October, Trump refused to certify the deal, saying it is not in the national interest.

"Scaring the worldwide community with the decisions of a mad man is a repetitive tactic that has proved to be ineffective", Ali Shamkhani said, according to Reuters.

However, the Russian minister accused the US of provoking tensions by stating that a military option is still on the table and by conducting military exercises on the Korean Peninsula.

The two Koreas met again on Monday.

"Hopefully it will lead to success for the world, not just for our country, but for the world".
