  • USA president derogatory comments : Nikki Haley expresses her regrets to African ambassadors

US media reported that during an Oval Office meeting on immigration, Trump described Africa, together with Haiti and El Salvador, as "shithole countries" supplying undesirable immigrants to the United States.

During Thursday's briefing, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said the president has denied using the vulgar word that has been widely reported.

Anatolio Ndong Mba, Equatorial Guinea's U.N. ambassador and head of the U.N.'s 54-nation African Group, said Nikki Haley "regretted" the fallout from the comments.

Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the United Nations, expressed her regrets on Thursday January 18th to African ambassadors who said they were outraged by Donald Trump's insulting comments about immigration according to one of the diplomats, reports the Huffington Post France.

The African Group condemned Trump's "outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks" and demanded a retraction and apology.

The Equato-Guinean ambassador further explained that the African group of emissaries had "made a recommendation" to Nikki Haley to ease the tensions, which she promised to pass on to Donald Trump.

Diplomats speaking on the condition of anonymity told Reuters that South African U.N. Ambassador Jerry Matjila, who spoke on behalf of the group, told Haley "it could be useful" for Trump to address African leaders directly when they meet in Addis Ababa at the African Union.

Still, Ndong Mba said Haley did not offer any apology for the incident. "She said she regretted that a lot".

"We appreciate the fact that she came, and she talked about all the cooperation between the United States and Africa, and that Africa is very important for the United States", Ndong Mba said.

He called the meeting "very friendly" and "very frank".

"Let me first point out that the president has said that he did not make those comments, that there were other individuals in the room who said they certainly did not hear any comments of the sort", she said.

Haley, however, failed to apologize for remarks Trump made during an immigration meeting at the White House last week.

One of the signatories, career diplomat and former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell told VOA the reaction to the president's alleged remarks is fierce, and building - not dissipating.
