A male officer was shot Sunday night during a barricaded gunman situation on Detroit's east side, police said.

There was no word on the relationship of the dead women to the suspect.

Police say a situation began around 10 p.m.in the 19400 block of Lamont when police received a call of shots fired. "We don't know and can't explain why someone with a mental illness does what they do, and it just so happens that this person with a mental illness has weapons".

Patrol cars, unmarked police cars, a Border Patrol auto, a tank-like vehicle and others flanked Outer Drive as officers responded to the barricaded gunman.

The officer was hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
