Parts of northern Puerto Rico on Sunday were left in the dark after a mechanical failure caused a fire at a power substation, CNN reported, citing authorities.

But that was before the explosion Sunday set off a huge fire at a main power substation, knocking out electricity in several towns and parts of the capital of San Juan.

"They'll be working throughout today to fully restore service", he said, adding that authorities are investigating what caused the fire.

The state electric power authority (AEE) said the blast was caused by a broken-down switch in Rio Piedras, resulting in a blackout in central San Juan and Palo Seco in the north.

Around 9 p.m., Cruz stated that areas of San Juan - such as Placita and Santurce - have been getting their power turned back on. As of around 9:15 p.m., Cruz tweeted that it appeared the fire had been nearly totally extinguished, and there were reports that parts of San Juan were getting electricity back.

In many cases, power workers are repairing equipment that should have always been replaced but remained online due to the power authority's long financial crisis.

"We are trying to restore that as quickly as possible", the company told The Associated Press.

Puerto Rico's governor announced last month that he plans to privatize the company, which relies on infrastructure almost three times older than the industry average.
