  • Germany's Dahlmeier, France's Fourcade win gold in biathlon at Winter Games

Pyeongchang: Frenchman Martin Fourcade claimed the biathlon pursuit gold medal and a place in history at the Pyeongchang Olympics on Monday.

Laura Dahlmeier of Germany won the women's biathlon 10 km pursuit of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games at the Alpensia Biathlon Center here on Monday.

Kuzmina joined Dahlmeier on the podium as the silver medalist in a near-photo finish with France's Anais Bescond, who took the bronze.

Dahlmeier could just be getting started, as she has several more chances to win medals, a year after she claimed five golds and one silver at the world championships.

The German needed all the calm she could muster as Kuzmina, who is second in the World Cup rankings, burst out of the pack to mount an early challenge.

She said: "It feels really great, it's wonderful".

She had drawn level by the end of the third lap but missed two of the five targets so had to ski the 150m penalty loop twice, allowing Dahlmeier to open up an unassailable advantage.

It warned against agreeing to talks before North Korea scrapped its nuclear program, saying it would only "benefit the enemy". While South Korea hasn't suspended the joint military exercises, it has agreed to delay them this year.

Asked to elaborate on how she managed to stay focused when others around her got rattled, Dahlmeier laughed.

"I am very happy, because this medal is my first big medal in an individual race".

"I wanted the gold yesterday and I missed, so I was really disappointed and today I am so satisfied I left it as a champion".

Samuelsson and Doll fought it out for the silver medal and the 20-year-old Swede powered past the German as they approached the ski stadium for the final time before holding on for second place, 12 seconds behind the victor.

"I'm very satisfied because it was a big disappointment yesterday for me, you know", said Fourcade.

Kuzmina, 33, won the sprint gold in 2014 but came 13th in the Pyeongchang event, meaning she started the pursuit 53.9 seconds behind Dahlmeier.
