  • Taliban 'kill 16 security personnel' in Afghanistan

The deputy leader of the Pakistani Taliban has been killed in a suspected US drone strike and a new deputy has been appointed said the Tehrik-e-Taliban paksitan. Pakistani authorities also wanted him for planning major terrorist attacks in the country and orchestrating a 2012 jailbreak in the northwestern town of Bannu that freed around 400 inmates, including high-profile militants. Mufti Wali Noor has now been appointed as his successor, said Monday's TTP announcement.

Officials in Afghanistan say four operatives of the national intelligence agency have gunned down their 16 colleagues before fleeing to join the Taliban insurgency in the southern Helmand province.

Earlier, reports suggested that Sajna was among two men taken down in the United States strike.

Afghan and USA officials have long alleged insurgents use sanctuaries in Pakistan for planning deadly attacks on the other side of the border, charges Islamabad denies.

In December previous year, members of the group attacked a college in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, shooting dead at least nine people and injuring 36.

Omar Zawak, the provincial government spokesman, confirmed the incident saying the Taliban also assaulted the NDS Center while the insider attack was under way, sparking fierce clashes with Afghan security guards.

The US government has not released any information on the killing.

The comments come amid mounting tension between Washington and Islamabad after Mr Trump last month suspended aid and accused Pakistan of offering a "safe haven" to terrorists operating in Afghanistan.

North Waziristan and other federally administered tribal areas around it have long hosted militant bases blamed for attacks on both sides of the porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
