Emily Sweeney brakes after her third run during the women's luge final at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Tuesday.
Sweeney was heading down during the fourth run of the luge competition in PyeongChang when she became sideways on her toboggan. Sweeney skidded out of the straight after the ninth turn and looped along the next curve, crashing into the wall with her feet.
Sweeney, a 24-year-old from ME, was able to walk off the course under her own power.
Though this is Sweeney's first Olympic appearance, she is no stranger to the competition. On Monday, Austrian luger Birgit Platzer fell on the turn and actually went airborne, though luckily, she, too, was alright.
There were concerns that she may have suffered leg or spinal injuries in the crash.
Sweeney told reporters she was okay as she was helped off the course and after being attended to the medical staff, was diagnosed with bumps and bruises. She actually said she was okay at that point, and it was confirmed that she had no broken bones or anything of that nature, though she was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Yeah, it's a bummer, for sure, and I know I'm better than that, but here we are.
Sweeney lost control around Curve 9, the track's most treacherous spot, and then began careening all over the track.
"I've never been so relieved than when I saw her getting up and walking", said American teammate Summer Britcher, who was choking back tears. Crashes, however, have not come as often as they did in the 2006 and 2010 Games, both of which left athletes openly complaining about track safety.
Erin Hamlin, who carried the United States flag during the Opening Ceremony andn who won bronze in Sochi, finished sixth in her final Olympics.
