  • Amazon confirms job cuts at Seattle headquarters, hundreds of positions impacted

Its full-time and part-time headcount surged 66 percent in the fourth quarter to 5,66,000 from a year earlier.

The company has confirmed it will axe a "small" number of positions across the business, but stopped short of giving a number.

The hold reduced the company's job listings in Seattle to their lowest in years, creating an ominous air around the employees of Amazon as rumors of a "re-org" pedaled about their grassy campus.

On Monday, US media reported that Amazon was laying off "hundreds" of employees in Seattle, as well as several others in its global operations. And a year ago, Quidsi, the subsidiary behind and other sites, cut more than 250 jobs.

Amazon has not ruled out making cuts at its United Kingdom operations as part of a rare global jobs shake-up at the online retail giant. In fact, according to Amazon's latest quarterly earnings report, it had grown its global workforce by 66% over the previous year.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis also denied rumblings that North Korea could drive a wedge in Washington and Seoul's relationship.

"Amazon's business is growing, not declining", said Lagoni, who spent a year at Amazon before launching his company. Amazon confirmed to the United States media that this was part of its annual planning process, and that it was making head-count adjustments across the company.

There is little doubt that Amazon is expanding swiftly and hiring globally. In Seattle alone, the company is claimed to have nearly 4,000 openings.

Sources have said that Amazon has an issue with overpopulation in the company. However, in a statement, an Amazon spokesman told a publication that the decision to lay off employees is a part of its annual planning process.

Employees put on notice can also choose to contest their manager's determination that led them into the improvement plan in the first place, or opt not to participate at all and take a severance package to leave the company.

"It's a well-loved strategy" to cut employees, one former Amazonian said, adding that during his time at the company he saw several talented employees "managed out" that way. "We do not use our performance management process to achieve head-count goals".
